WHAT is ESOL?

ESL (English as a second language) and ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) all refer to the use or study of English by speakers with a different native language.

Students in Duval County and in the state of Florida have a two year window to learn the language without failing a grade.  Once that two years is over (from date of entry) the student will "count" on tests like a regular ed student.  Students can test out of ESOL if that pass the CELLA and LAS test in k-2 or the FCAT in 3, 4, and 5th.  Once they pass they will be placed in a regular ed classroom but still will be monitored.

The students in my class this year are mostly 1st year ESOL students.  I have a handful of students that have been here longer than two years.
